A more relaxed man you cannot imagine than Penek, on the 7th July 2012.
The Lumpinee Stadium & Thailand featherweight champion is about to do battle with former Lumpinee Stadium lightweight titlist and #1 ranked Sagetdao, but having spent the day eating and chilling with him, his manager Numnoi and his camp Singpatong, you’d think he had nothing more strenuous coming up than a night on the tiles lined up. Thus far we’ve had two feasts of curries, fried chicken, massamun, omelettes and banana slices in coconut juice; aspiring fighters, take note of what to eat before a scrap!
Penek was named Sportswriters of Thailand Fighter of the Year 2012 after claiming yet more titles with his toppling of super-bantamweight and p4p king Sam-A, to capture Thailand & Lumpinee featherweight gold. Sagetdao of course beat Saenchai twice in 2011, won the Lumpinee lightweight title, and also toppled the-then incumbent of the Fighter of the Year award in Nong-O.
The fight is to be at a catch-weight of 130lbs (thus, the fight is at super-featherweight, but as Penek is stepping up a division, and Sagetdao down, it’s essentially a catch-weight fight between two guys who are naturally two weight classes apart). While my own 6hr car ride down to Phattalung in the early hours of the morning from Phuket with Num Noi’s brother ended up being thirty seconds too late to catch Sagetdao stepping on the scales, we did get there just in the nick of time and caught the rest of the ceremony. It must be said; I was amused the see the reaction of some to my presence there as a farang:
Stay tuned to FightSportAsia for interviews, videos, and – circumstances permitting – full video of the fight itself, between PENEK Sitnumnoi & SAGETDAO Phetpayathai.
