China’s UFC Star: Zhang Tiequan

zhang

Well, half Chinese at least; the man known as “The Mongolian Wolf”.

Zhang Tiequan is China’s newest addition to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and part of the China Top Team outfit that includes Jiangliang Li, Honggang Yao and the infamous Aotegen Bater (he of the illegal soccer kicks on Brian Robertson). The team is definitely one of the top camps in Asia, consisting of Legend FC and RUFF fighters, effectively a near-stronghold over the two biggest Mixed Martial Arts promotions in China & by extension, Hong Kong.

Zhang Tiequan fought in Legend FC and URCC up until 2010, after spending much of his early career in the now seemingly defunct Art of War, until he made the switch over to America and to the WEC (then essentially the “small divisions” branch of the UFC, and predecessor of the UFC’s feather, bantam and flyweight divisions). After going 1-1 with the WEC, Tiequan made the Great Leap Forwards along with the rest of that organisation as it was merged into the UFC, and he became a fully fledged “Ultimate Fighter”, as they say stateside (spits).

Dropping down to featherweight, the former lightweight (who also competed at 77kg) won in quick and impressive fashion against Jason Reinhardt, with a guillotine choke in 48 seconds of the first round, but then sadly for the Chinese fighter, two successive losses followed; a decision defeat to Darren Elkins, and a knockout at the hands (literally – or hand) of Shooto veteran Issei Tamura, in an interesting Sino-Japan battle. And when those nations collide, it’s always bloody, and unfortunately for the Mongolian Wolf, it was China again who suffered the rape.

But as China held out from 1937-45 to see their invaders’ power and might crumble as the war elsewhere took its toll, so too will Tiequan hold out in America and look to push on and break his streak. He has the talent, an adept submission grappler and with knockout power in his hands and feet. He has the (dual) nationality to become a huge breakout star.

And he certainly has the nickname.

    Hello Daniel:

Aotegen Bateer is not and never was part of China Top Team, Zhang Tie Quan and Li Jing Liang were athletes at the Xian Sports Institute where Bateer is still current attending.

bateer has been a national sanda champion multiple times at 80 kg, and has defeated Liu hailong before, is ridiculous to say he is not a top fighter in china

China Top Team is a private team – not meaning he is not a top fighter – Bateer is currently 72K National Sanda Champion
