It’s no secret that Hesdy Gerges has been struggling against high level competition lately. The Egyptian bruiser once ranked in the top ten heavyweights in the world, but after dropping three fights in a row to Rico Verhoeven and Daniel Ghita, Gerges seemed to be out of form in lackluster wins against American Carter Williams and Sergei Laschenko. When Gerges lost to Ismael Londt in the second biggest upset of the night at the K-1 Finale in Zagreb last year. many questioned his position as an elite level fighter. Earlier today in Croatia, Hesdy proved the doubters wrong by toppling the 2012 SUPERKOMBAT champion Pavel Zhuravlev at Final Fight Championship 6.
Gerges used his speed and kicks to out-manuever the punch heavy Zhuravlev, content to keep the fight on the outside and score points from a distance. The victory marks Hesdy’s first win since he made the transition to Vos Gym from Chakuriki, and it will be interesting to see how far his game will continue to develop.
Also on the card, Igor Jurkovic defeated Dzeved Poturak in a rather one-sided affair, using his youth and speed to out-pace the aging but dangerous Poturak. Now that Igor has amassed three wins in FFC against Freddy Kemayo, Raul Catinas, and now Poturak, I think a fight with Gerges makes sense.
